Art Deco Chess Set
The streamlined, geometric elegance of this beautiful chess set reflects the essence of Art Deco design. From the mid 1920s until the outbreak of the Second World War, Art Deco epitomised all that was glamorous and modern in contemporary design. It was this style that Hollywood embraced during its golden age. Film sets, publicity photographs and the luxury goods that surrounded films stars were inevitably Art Deco in spirit. Today the work of Art Deco designers is admired for its beauty, energy and imagination. These inspiring qualities are mirrored in the sophisticated design of this hand finished Chess set.

Battle of Bannockburn Chess Set
In the Battle of Bannockburn chess set, the artists and sculptors have captured a pivotal moment in Scottish history. The patriotic quest of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, to free his land of foreign domination reached its climax at the Battle of Bannockburn on 24th June 1314. By the summer of 1314 only Stirling Castle remained in the grip of Scotland's English overlords. It was just south of here at the Burn (or small stream) at Bannock that the Scottish army prepared for the the decisive set-piece battle against the army of King Edward II of England.

Battle Of Bannockburn Hand Decorated Chess Set
The skillfully hand decorated set features many of the historic characters from this famous battle. The Scots side is led by Robert the Bruce, King Robert I who was famously heartened by the tenacious spider to persist in his struggle against the English. He is accompanied by his queen Elizabeth de Burgh who was reunited with King Robert after being captured eight years earlier. The English are represented by Edward II who reigned from 1284 until 1327 when he was deposed, imprisoned and horrifically killed at the behest of his wife, the Queen of England, Isabella of France. The rook on both sides is the Tower of Old Sterling Castle which overlooked the battle from its site on top of an ancient volcanic rock.

Canterbury Cathedral Chess Set
The city of Canterbury has been a place of Christian worship for nearly two thousand years. Following a major fire at the original cathedral in 1174, the monks at Canterbury used the revenue from the many pilgrims visiting the shrine and relics of St Thomas to create the first Gothic cathedral in England. The rebuilding and reconstruction continued during the following century and ensured that at the end of the Middle Ages, Canterbury Cathedral was one of the noblest churches in Christendom. Our skilled designers and sculptors have created from the architecture and statuary in and around Canterbury Cathedral a chess set of gracious proportions and great detail.

Canterbury Cathedral Hand Decorated Chess Set
Skilfully decorated, the characters in this chess set all have strong connections with Canterbury Cathedral. The king is represented by King Henry IV whose body was laid to rest in the cathedral in 1413 next to Joan of Navarre, his wife, who died in 1437. The bishop is represented by Canterbury's most well-known archbishop, Thomas Becket, who was famously slain on the steps of the altar. The knight is one of the most famous military leaders of English history, Edward the Black Prince whose body lies in Trinity Chapel in the cathedral.
